Apple News Doesn’t Support Video Embedding

I’ve been keeping a close eye on the Apple News platform as I think it can be a great tool for publishers. At the moment, it pulls an RSS feed from my site (and any other site included on Apple News) and formats it nicely for the iPhone and iPad.

Earlier on this evening, I posted two articles with Youtube videos embedded in them. One was a Tim Cook interview and the other was that 5k iMac getting obliterated by an anti-tank cannon.

Shortly after I posted those articles, they both showed up in Apple news. Minus the videos. That is quite a big problem. Those articles are pretty shitty without the main video content. There was no indication that the video was missing, it was just gone.

Missing Video

So far I am loving Apple News but I feel this is quite an oversight at best. Lets hope that Apple has a solution to this sooner rather than later. They have indicated that they want to move away from pulling in feeds to publishers actually creating their content within Apple’s News Publisher section on iCloud. They could possibly have a solution once that happens.

Another interesting thing is that Apple offers no analytics on the views/reads you get through Apple News if your article is pulled from a feed. They also remove embedded adverts and have no way of monetising feed content. They have indicated that both advertising and analytics will be available when using News Publisher once it is released.

With most iOS content blockers blocking Google Analytics and no analytics info from Apple News, I wonder how many publishers will be seeing a dive in their analytics shortly?

As always, I’ll keep you updated…

Stephen Colbert asks Tim Cook about Apple’s Self Driving Car

Stephen Colbert’s show is a comedy show after all, so this interview pokes fun at Siri and a few things Apple. He also asks about Apple’s self driving car, and asks Tim Cook if him being gay is a feature!

I think Tim handled that very well. Nice to see the CEO of one of the world’s most valuable companies joking around and having fun. Oh, and Tim, please don’t give Siri a raise. She still needs to up her game a bit more!

Development: SuperSport Kodi Add-on

UPDATE

Please do NOT contact me regarding this, I will not make it public no matter what you are willing to offer me. I appreciate the polite requests I have received for this, however recently I have been receiving many rude emails saying “How dare I not make this public.” I am astounded by some people’s stupidity and no, swearing at me will not make me suddenly hand this over to you. I made this as a proof of concept. That is all this will ever be. Thanks.

The Plan: Make a nice wrapper for SuperSport’s online streaming for my Kodi Media Centre.

This is quite a difficult topic due to piracy. So I’ll start out by saying, I will NOT make this public. I do have login credentials to legally access SuperSport’s web streams. I DO NOT condone people using similar plugins for Plex or Kodi to bypass authentication.

Now that that is out of the way, lets have a look at what I managed to get done. This was never meant to be pretty, it was meant to be a proof of concept. This was my first Python Script and my first Kodi Add-on. As it turns out, it was a lot easier than I expected.

The CEO of GoPro happened to mention that GoPro are making a Drone while on stage at the Code Conference.

This is HUGE news. We have been seeing so many cool drone concepts lately, including LILY. Now what happens when the king of action cameras makes a drone? I bet that this drone will be awesome and fairly affordable. And with the might of GoPro behind it I bet it will be a huge success.

Woodman also revealed that GoPro is working on a drone, slated for debut in the first half of 2016.

“It’s incredible to see our world from new perspectives. It’s a real ‘Oh my God’ moment,” said Woodman on stage at the conference. “We did that with our GoPro cameras, and we see a similar opportunity in the quadcopter market. It’s something that’s in our DNA, and we are excited about it across the company.”
