Cool Shit: Extreme-Smartphone 9500 V2

This post is a little different from other Cool Shit posts. The good folks at Extreme-Smartphone.com reached out to me and told me they were launching the second version of their X-Tel 9500 phone in South Africa.

Now, I’ll admit that name doesn’t exactly roll off your tongue. But it doesn’t really need to as this phone is more about getting things done than showing off.

Recently the likes of Sony and Samsung have been water and dust-proofing their phones. That’s cute if you accidentally drop your phone in a puddle. This phone wants to still be ready to go if a truck drives over it.

The company that makes this phone (X-Systems) makes everything from dump-phones to tablets, all ruggedised for the harshest conditions. They also have a focus on mobile security. That should make for a pretty good combo.

As for the X-Tel 9500 V2 we have some specs:

  • Gorilla Glass 3.0
  • IP68 Waterproof
  • Physical Answer + Reject buttons
  • Physical SOS side button
  • Removable 2800 mAh battery
  • Upgradeable battery (4500 mAh)
  • 4G, Dual Sim
  • Bluetooth LE
  • Range Sensor
  • Light Sensor
  • 8MP Sony Camera
  • 4″ FHD Screen
  • Quad-Core 1.4GHz CPU
  • Android 5.1
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB Storage

Now for the fun stuff: They claim this phone is “hexa-proof”, that means it is waterproof, dust-proof, shockproof, freeze-proof, tempe-proof, and oil-proof. That is a little bit more than the average smartphone will handle in its lifetime.

Local pricing is yet to be announced but in Europe it goes for 430EUR so it should be inline with similar spec Android smartphones.

It seems like there is quite a powerful phone hidden under that though exterior.

I’m waiting to get my hands on a review model and when I do, I’ll put this phone through its paces and see if it lives up to what it claims.

A Complete List of All the Shows and Movies on Netflix in South Africa

A lot has been said about how good or bad the South African Netflix library is. Wondering what movies and shows are available?

Well have a look here for movies and here for series. (Nice searchable lists too)

Well, no point in me keeping you any longer then, go forth and Netflix and chill.

Cool Shit: Netflix has Launched in SA

In what was the most chilled launch in history, Netflix kind of just appeared in South Africa. I would imagine some techie just got an email and flicked a switch and that was that.

The time for Netflix and Chill is NOW! You get a 1 Month free trial to see if it actually works.

Compared to the US version, some shows are missing, but do you really care? ShowMax is the bastard child of DStv so we can give that one a skip.

Oh, one note, you’ll be charged in US Dollars because our currency is about as stable as your mother in law.

Cool Shit: Keurig Kold

When I was growing up we had a Soda-stream machine and I thought that was pretty cool. The Keurig Kold takes that concept to a whole new level!

Just like a Nespresso machine (Or Keurig Coffee Machine) you buy capsules. You insert the capsule and out comes your drink. It is as simple as that. Except this time, the drinks are cold and possibly carbonated.

What sets the Keurig Kold apart is actually their licensing agreements. (Something I never thought I’d say) They have deals in place with brands of drink so that you can create your own Coke Zero or obscure iced tea.

At almost US$400 this thing isn’t cheap but just like the Nespresso machines, I doubt that is their target market anyway.

If Keurig is listening, I’d love a test device thrown my way. I promise I’ll give it back.

Check out a video of it in action below:

How to Easily Share The Music That You Stream

So you use Apple Music and your friend uses Deezer. Or you swear by Spotify but your girlfriend uses Rdio.

You find the coolest song IN THE WORLD and just have to share it with them. Gone are the days of “Hey, search for this song” and “No that’s not how you spell it.”

I present to you Son.gg. (Pretty cool domain if you ask me)

Instead of me going on about how it works just click here (http://son.gg/3754a0/) to discover a really difficult to share song.

I also have it on good authority that some apps are on the way to make this process even easier!
